His age was 87 years. Character actor Charles Dierkop is well recognized for his role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Dierkop passed away at Sherman Oaks Hospital in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 25. He portrayed the villain George “Flat Nose” Curry in the iconic Western starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman. His daughter Lynn claims that he suffered a heart attack and pneumonia before passing away.
Dierkop’s other notable performances were in the police procedural Police Woman starring Angie Dickinson and the caper film The Sting starring Newman and Redford once again.
After the Korean War, Dierkop enlisted in the US military and was stationed in Korea. In 1936, he was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Following his discharge from the service, he attempted to secure employment in Hollywood while attending the American Foundation of Dramatic Arts in Philadelphia.
Dierkop claimed that having a broken nose made him more like an outlaw, which is why he was a good fit for the character of Butch Cassidy in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (2018). “On a plane, my agent read a script that said, ‘Flat Nose Curry.” “I think I have someone in mind,” he remarked in an interview with Rob Word. “I was cast immediately after having an interview with [director] George Roy Hill.” They were wed in 1958 and divorced in 1974. Dierkop married Joan Addis, whom he had met at the American Foundation of Dramatic Arts. Together, they were parents to a daughter named Lynn and a son named Charles Jr., who passed away at the age of 29.
