On television, American actress Angeline Dickinson—better known by her stage name, Angie—has great success. She started off in her career doing anthology show work in the early 1950s. She eventually landed a role in “Gun the Man Down” after that, but you may also recognize her from the Golden Globe-winning movie “Rio Bravo.”
She was actively interested in movies in addition to her career on television. Ocean’s 11 (1964), Pretty Maids All in a Row, The Chase, The Outside Man, The Art of Love, The Killers, and several other movies were among the roles she appeared in. In the 1960s and 1970s, she had a demanding schedule as an actor.
But undoubtedly the most significant was her portrayal of Seargent Pepper Anderson in “Police Woman.” She was the first actress to play the lead in a television show and a big hit. Her influence has influenced some adolescent females to become police officers.
The actress acknowledged that seeing a woman in uniform on television was “unique.” It was a fresh experience back then, even though it’s common to see women in law enforcement jobs on television these days, on shows like CSI or Law & Order.
In an interview for the PBS program “Pioneers of Television,” the actress discussed her involvement in the part as well as the positive reaction that crime dramas had even in those early years.
The actor, nevertheless, never considered herself a “feminist.” She believed that she had to outperform males. Even though she wasn’t a feminist, many women felt more empowered to make certain decisions after seeing her.
The actress said of herself, “When I was up for a role, it was a role for a woman; I didn’t compete with men.”
When asked about the income gap that actresses still experience, she went on to say that it didn’t effect her. The actress said that the compensation she was receiving at the time left her “satisfied.”
She also expressed regret for the chance she lost with “Police Woman.” She said there was nothing else on the show. The show, according to her, was “too clean.” She did not like how well every episode concluded and how little violence there was.
The actress expressed her hope that her show had shown villains facing harsher penalties. She enjoyed watching modern programs like “Southland” and “Detroit 1-8-7,” which portray similar situations more skillfully than her program did.
During the height of the show’s popularity, the actress disclosed that she frequently received letters from admirers expressing how her work had motivated them to pursue careers in law enforcement.
The actress, who was in her 40s at the time of “Police Woman,” put in a lot of effort to provide a fantastic performance. She put in twice as much effort into her career as actresses half her age, yet rather than fading with age, her beauty seemed to grow even more radiant.
Many were captivated by her presence. That’s why there are rumors that she was quite close to the Rat Pack. After costarring in the first Ocean’s 11, there were renowned rumors that the actress had an affair with Frank Sinatra for ten years. Rumors also circulated that Angie was close to both former president John F. Kennedy and Dean Martin.
The actress also starred alongside George Clooney in the 2001 film “Ocean’s 11.” She is still recognized as a Hollywood icon and is given high appreciation by the whole business.
The actress said something shocking in an interview in 2020. When she appeared on “CBS Sunday Morning Show,” questions regarding her experience on “Police Woman” were posed to her. She said that her initial reaction upon receiving the role offer was to “throw up.”
It was described as a “horrendous undertaking” at the time by her. She disclosed that the show shot a demanding 20 to 21 episodes per season. She assured the showrunners that she would give them a maximum of four years!
After four years of labor on the program, she finally admitted that she wasn’t paid much. She claims that years of her life “sapped” and that it “wasn’t worth it” in the end.
The actress only said that David Gerber had assured her the job would make her a household celebrity in response to the question of what motivated her to do it. However, she acknowledged that while at the time it was something she had wanted, people’s preferences are always shifting.
The actress has been married twice in her life. 1952 saw the marriage of her first husband, Gene Dickinson, terminate in 1960. Later on, the actress was married to Burt Bacharach. She spent 1965–1981 together. Additionally, it was Bacharach’s second union.
Together, the couple gave birth to their first child, a girl. Their daughter, Nikki, is their name. She was born three months ahead of schedule in 1966 owing to preterm birth. Years later, Angie disclosed that her daughter has Asperger’s syndrome, a kind of “high-functioning autism” that is on the autistic spectrum.
Nikki attended Cal Lutheran University to study geology. Regretfully, her eyesight deteriorated over time, making a profession impossible for her. After that, her parents brought her to a special school, where she spent 10 years.
Tragically, Nikki committed suicide at her Thousand Oaks condo in 2007. She took her own life to “escape the ravages” in her mind, according to a statement she made public at the time. She was forty years old.
Afterwards, Angie remarked of her kid, “She was amazing, hilarious, and extremely intelligent.” Yes, hence the nicest memories I have of her are all of them.
Angie was a well-known figure in the industry while Bacharach was still relatively unknown when they got acquainted. However, Bacharach quickly composed songs for Butch Cassidy and Dionne Warwick, which greatly aided in his rise to fame.
Angie was more than willing to step aside as he became busier in order to become a better wife and mother. To ensure she was always near to home, she even turned down assignments. She waited to enter the industry until after “Police Woman” was released.
She had a provision in her contract that stated she would return home by six o’clock p.m. when she started the job, but naturally, things did not turn out as planned. In order to make sure the family ate dinner on time, she would frequently wind up bringing Italian takeaway on her way home from work. Years passed before she realized what Bacharach meant when he informed her that she was always furious.
Much later, she realized that she was blaming everything on herself, including her marriage, and that this was ruining everything. Afterwards, she questioned if her husband would have loved her more if she had stayed at home and if being a Hollywood mother had been worthwhile.
Before being divorced, the couple lived apart for five years. Even though they spent time with other people, Angie never threw away images of Bacharach because, well, he was her daughter’s father.
Her daughter was a drummer and musician as well. Their relationship was difficult and tense, particularly after Nikki joined a religious cult at the age of 14.
Nikki, who claimed she would “never be as feminine” as her mother, was likewise not very feminine. Nevertheless, the ladies shared a lovely connection, and Angie always desired for her daughter to be near her.
She brought Nikki to Hawaii while she was working on “Pearl.” But as soon as they entered the sea, a tide met them, causing them to crash onto a coral reef. Angie was certain they wouldn’t make it. Fortunately, she managed to keep her kid dry and secure.
Nikki experienced several health problems, including vision problems, as a result of her early birth. She belonged to the autistic spectrum as well. Nikki would occasionally fight with her mother physically, but Angie was always sympathetic to her daughter’s anguish.
Angie left her job to care for her daughter Nikki as her health required more time. Regarding it, she stated, “It wasn’t a sacrifice.” Would I have been working outside? Indeed, if I hadn’t had a daughter who depended on me, I would have been performing in plays in Chicago or something like. However, I did. I was not endowed with leisure time.
Angie turned to her friends for help after her daughter committed suicide. Veronique, the widow of Gregory Peck, who was acquainted with Tony Kushner, was among them. One of the actress’s pieces, which dealt with the issue of losing someone, provided her some comfort.
On February 8, 2023, earlier this year, Burt Bacharach, who was 94 years old, likewise departed from this life. Nikki had been Angie’s sole kid; he had other children. The well-known composer was separated and divorced from the actress for a number of reasons, including his adultery, which he acknowledged in his memoirs.
Angie would frequently lament that the composer did not love her in the manner that is typically associated with love. “He had no respect for me,” she remarked. She said that she did love him in response to the question.
The actress currently resides in her own Beverly Hills house and has a quiet, sedate existence. It seems sense that she is rarely spotted outside considering her elderly age. Her final motion picture was “Elvis Has Left The Building” in 2004, and she had an appearance on “Mending Fences” on television in 2009.
But after that, she appeared on camera. She had an appearance on the PBS documentary “I’ve Gotta Be Me” about Sammy Davis, Jr. The actress declared herself “lucky” when she was 79 years old. “I came along at the right time for so many great things,” the woman said. I made friends with several of the amazing stars I met, and I even fell in love with a few. Truly, it was an amazing existence. And it still is.
She expressed her desire to avoid performing “grandmother parts” if she were to resume her acting career. She did, however, think of performing in theater or “one-woman shows.”
Even at ninety-two, she still finds it challenging to work on television and in movies. “Even at my age, I am still into the glamour-girl syndrome: You know, she has great legs, but she can’t act,” the woman said that she was still preoccupied with appearances.
She was seated next to Clint Eastwood in 2008, and he made a joke with the actress about how makeup artists no longer fussed over him at his age. But the actress disclosed that things had not worked out that way for her. She admitted that she felt naked without her hair and makeup since she had become accustomed to them.
“You end up obsessed with your looks,” she subsequently commented in reference to it. I’m done with elevators that don’t have mirrors. No matter who you are, everything changes after you turn 50.
The actress has a reputation for being quiet about her personal life and remaining silent. Publishers, she claimed, are probably not interested in a tell-all from her because of this. But I won’t do warts and everything, you know? she remarked. I’m not like that. Maybe one day, if I find the motivation, I’ll perform as a one-woman show.
Writer Alexandra Becket of LA Magazine disclosed that she frequently watched Angie’s cat and said that Angie was “the sweetest neighbor I could ask for” in a neighborhood full of famous people.
It is said that the actress lives alone. I hope she’s doing well and isn’t feeling lonely on her own!
These days, all these declarations of “finally strong women” make me giggle. Angie was kicking ass before any of these alleged “firsts,” and she did it with style, elegance, and a willingness to take no prisoners.
Growing up, I saw a lot of strong women in movies and television who accomplished great things during a period when they were the pioneers. It appears like everyone has just forgotten.
