Al Roker, the adored Today show weatherman, has been vocal about taking care of her spouse through a recent, potentially fatal health crisis.
Deborah Roberts, Roker’s 27-year wife, recently shared her experiences tending to him when he was in the hospital and recovering from a severe 7-hour procedure with Entertainment Tonight.
“I believe a lot of people don’t realize that — and I never realized that — that being a caregiver is really hard, draining, terrifying, all of those things, and I never went through anything like this,” the caregiver said in a statement to the website. And I honestly hope I won’t repeat the mistake.
But it’s challenging, the 62-year-old continued. It’s challenging. I think I’m still getting better. I’m still exhausted both mentally and physically, but you know what? I’m appreciative and making an effort to simply savor the now and rejoice that he and we are both healthy.
Roberts, a senior national affairs journalist for ABC News and a contributing anchor for 20/20, joked that she knows Roker, 68, is doing well since he’s “back to driving me crazy,” and she expressed her gratitude for being able to rely on her loved ones during the tough time.
I would say that my faith and spirituality got me through it, she said. People called, texted, and emailing from the location made all the difference. My family and coworkers helped me get through it. Colleagues, many of whom are present now, gave me encouragement when I thought I couldn’t go on.
Beginning in early November, when it was discovered that Roker had blood clots that had traveled from his leg to his lungs, Roker underwent two stays in the hospital that lasted almost two weeks each.
Roker had experienced a number of health issues, including a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2020. Roberts was scared after the most recent scare put him in danger of passing away, she told PEOPLE in January.
Roberts said of his daughters Courtney, 35, and Leila, 24, from his first marriage, “I was genuinely bracing myself to have a discussion with the kids about the possibility of losing their father.
I’m grateful to be alive, Roker said.
I’m sure I wouldn’t be here without you, but here we are,” Roker said, turning to face Roberts.
