Following the death of a devoted four-year-old due to a common infection, Ohio parents are “torn to shreds.”

Just a few days after the physician diagnosed their four-year-old daughter with a “common cold,” the Ohio couple is getting ready to bury her. The little girl all she wanted was for “everyone to love her just like she loves everyone else.”

Maisie Schmidt had a routine virus that turned deadly when it refused to loosen its tight grip, so medical professionals had to act fast to save her life. She was placed in a coma using medical means. But on March 26, the preschooler lost his life due to a massive stroke.

“There was simply nothing more that could be done,” her parents said while describing their painful choice to let their daughter go. Read on to learn more about the terrible fate of this wonderful girl.

In late March, Maisie started to cough and sneeze, so her parents, Patric and Christin Schmidt, rushed her to the doctor.

“We were informed it was simply a typical cold, so please bring her home with plenty of fluids and similar items,” Patric, her Ohioan father, told Cleveland 19.

Because they believed the doctors when they stated her illness wasn’t serious, the parents decided to bring her back home.

Nevertheless, on March 23, Maisie’s parents, concerned for her well-being, decided to take her to the emergency hospital because of her sudden drop in health and lack of energy.

“Maisie made a trip to the hospital with what everyone thought would be an in and out visit,” according to her uncle Michael Brigadier, who set up a GoFundMe page to support Maisie, her big brother, and her parents.

“Maisie has been grabbed by it.”
The youngster was put on “multiple forms of life support in order to give her body a fighting chance to come back from the human metapneumovirus [hMPV]” since her health had quickly gotten worse, and she was now “fighting for her life.”

According to the Cleveland Clinic, hMPV is a virus “that usually causes symptoms similar to the common cold,” much like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the flu.

Usually, by the time a child reaches the age of five, they have recovered completely, but regrettably, little Maisie did not experience this outcome.

Brigadier writes, “It’s taken hold of Maisie and isn’t letting go.”

“Ripped to pieces”

After that, Maisie was brought to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, where she was placed in a coma using medical means.

Her father said, “It’s not what you expected.” “We never imagined we’d be down here; we just assumed it was just a common cold and that we’d be taking her home the same day.”

As of March 24, Maisie was intubated, and medical professionals kept Maisie on life support as they helped her overcome “the war” that her grandma refers to as having “started in her body.”

On Facebook, Tammy McConnaughy says, “[Parents] are torn to shreds.” McConnaughy, who refers to her granddaughter as “Pocket,” adds, “Please everyone prayers prayers prayers For our Maisie to stay stable and we get good brews for all tests and her body just needs more time to heal and get back to us (SIC),” pleading with the community for assistance.

“Among the most endearing individuals”

On March 25, medical professionals found that the preschooler had experienced a stroke.

“She went in for a CT scan; they said there was some bleeding on the brain, so they wanted to get a scan of that. They discovered she had a massive stroke on the right side of her brain during that procedure,” her father stated.

After that, the child was brought in for brain surgery, and according to Patric, a portion of her brain had to be removed since it was so bloated in an attempt to preserve Maisie’s life.

At the time, Maisie’s parents were informed that she would remain in a medically induced coma for “several months” and be dependent on life support devices, which was an excellent prognosis.

Patric remarked, “She is one of the most lovable people that you’ll ever meet,” expecting to bring her home shortly. “She wants everyone to love her as much as she loves everyone else. She’s so smart and so willing to help anyone.”

“Maisie passed away.”

Her family sent Cleveland 19 a statement on March 26 in which they stated, “There was simply nothing more that could be done.”

Maisie’s life support was turned off.

In the meantime, Brigadier provided an update on the little child, whom he characterizes as “loving, smart, caring, and fun.”

On the GoFundMe website, he notes that as of March 27, the campaign has received more than $26,500 of its $15,000 target. “I hope I could give this story a nice conclusion. I wish I had the perfect words to say to comfort my loved ones and everyone else Maisie affected. He goes on, “Maisie died away this morning at around 11 a.m. It still seems strange to be typing these things hours later. That this could happen to such a nice family astounds me.

“I am so proud to be your Uncle Maisie,” the Brigadier continues, “and I’ll never forget what I have learned from you.”

Little Maisie, RIP. We send our warmest regards to loved ones and family during this difficult period of grieving.

Kindly share this story with others and let us know your thoughts on this heartbreaking situation so that we may honor Maisie’s legacy and promote love.
