An update from Jimmy Carter’s grandson following the 99-year-old former president’s admission to hospice care
Jimmy Carter, the former president, started hospice care a year ago this week. But according to his grandson, his grandfather’s soul is still very much alive.
Since Carter began receiving hospice care in February of last year, a lot has happened. This followed several hospital hospitalizations to address an increasing number of issues. Jimmy’s wife Rosalynn passed away in November. The former president has experienced several health issues in the last few years, including brain and liver cancers, a fractured hip, and brain surgery.
A year after entering hospice care, Carter’s grandson has provided an update on his condition.
“After a year of daily hospice care, we have no hopes for his body.” However, we know that his spirit is as powerful as ever, he said on CBS Sunday Morning.
The Carter family as a whole expressed their gratitude for all of Jimmy’s support throughout the previous year.
“A year after entering hospice care, President Carter remains at home with his family,” the statement said. “The Carter family is appreciative of everyone’s love and their continued understanding of their right to privacy during this difficult time.”
Additionally, it stated, “His family is happy that his decision to enter hospice care last year sparked so many family discussions about a crucial topic across the nation.”
Carter turns out to be among the rare few—just 6% of patients—who began receiving hospice care and have survived for more than a year. As previously mentioned, his 77-year wife Rosalynn passed away in November at the age of 96, just a few months after it was discovered she had dementia.
Dr. Michael Raines, Jimmy’s physician, expressed his concern at that very moment following Rosalynn’s death, stating that it was “such a big loss for him.”
“Sometimes people who are very dependent on each other—not just in love but also in relationships and friendship—die soon after the death of one another when they are married for a long time,” he acknowledged.
In the little time he has left, let’s wish Jimmy Carter peace. Kindly use the comment box if you would like to join us in praying for him.
