Modern thieves are becoming more cunning and inventive. Indeed, they have devised a novel method of automobile theft that is concerning individuals worldwide!
Auto thieves have discovered a low-tech (and covert) signal that they may use to steal autos.
Though it originated in Limpopo, South Africa, this method of doing things swiftly spread and was even observed in the United States.
The scheme is as follows: a potential automobile thief will “mark” their target by placing a water bottle on one of the wheels.
It advises hiding the bottle from the driver when you get in the car by placing it on the front passenger side wheel.
The driver picks up pace, and the empty plastic bottle makes a disconcerting cracking sound.
Most drivers would immediately pull over and examine their surroundings to see what they may have hit.
The auto thief has to relocate immediately.
Theftsters can quickly remove the owner’s belongings and flee if they break into a car while the engine is running.
On the other hand, the thief may take advantage of the opportunity to break into the automobile and take the valuables—such as a wallet or phone—that were left inside.
Either way, the motorist runs the risk of getting hurt when they step out of their car to investigate the sounds.
To avoid falling for this scam, check the wheels for a few seconds before getting into your automobile, advises Michigan radio station WCRZ.
Verify that everything is in its proper place. Take extra caution if you find a water bottle wedged between the tire and the frame. It’s possible that the thief is hiding behind you.
Then, to report what’s happening and that you’re afraid for your safety, you can covertly dial 911.
