Research Alerts Us to the Impending Solar Eclipse

It is already widely known that a complete solar eclipse is scheduled for April 8. However, scientists are alerting the public to the potential risks that eclipses may provide to drivers.

We know from the 2017 complete solar eclipse that similar astronomical and astrological phenomena are associated with a higher number of fatal traffic accidents. Research from the Universities of British Columbia and Toronto provides us with a basic picture of what may occur. They discovered that there may be a significant increase in auto accidents during the eclipse.

The Analysis of the Complete Eclipse
“The increased risks likely come from increased traffic, travel on unfamiliar routes, speeding to arrive on time, driver distraction by a celestial event, drug or alcohol impairment, or viewing the eclipse from unsafe roadside locations,” said Dr. Donald Redelmeier, a professor at the University of Toronto and one of the study’s authors. Although there seems to be a lot of reasons why an eclipse may occur, the data is unaffected.

An analysis of the traffic patterns during the 2017 total solar eclipse revealed an unfavorable trend. During the previous eclipse, 741 individuals lost their lives in auto accidents, an astounding 10.3 fatalities per hour. Conversely, on control days, the frequency of fatal collisions increased by 31%, with 7.9 deaths per hour.

Dr. John Staples, a clinical associate professor at the University of British Columbia, discussed the need of taking preventative measures to avert tragedies. “To help prevent another potential rise in traffic deaths, drivers should observe speed limits, put seatbelts on, give other drivers more room, and never drive while intoxicated.”

What’s Causing the Issues? Specifically
Contrary to popular belief, there is no clear correlation between the increase in fatal collisions and the darkness brought on by the solar eclipse. More specifically, Dr. Redelmeier stated, “The issue is the times around which people are traveling to their place of observation and particularly afterward.”2: While celebrating the eclipse and having a good time, people aren’t acting completely normal. It resembles traveling on New Year’s Eve in several ways.

Redelmeier and Staples examined the Fatality Analysis Reporting System of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with great care, observing the trends that emerged over time. Death rates from crashes rose above normal prior to the eclipse, fell below average throughout it, and then skyrocketed to over 50% above average when it ended.

Like during popular travel days like Thanksgiving and July Fourth, it’s critical to spread awareness and educate people about the hazards. For a number of reasons, millions of people may take to the roadways ahead of next week’s solar eclipse. People must thus use particular caution and abide with safety regulations.

Redelmeier emphasized once more the significance of adhering to conventional safety procedures, which encapsulated the primary findings of their study. He emphasized how crucial it is to observe speed limits, put an end to distractions while driving, change lanes, use turn signals (which is something that BMW drivers do all the time), and, above all, buckle up.

Sun eclipse over the vehicle
It is imperative that drivers keep in mind the lessons they gained from the previous eclipse. Please make arrangements to drive extra cautiously, remove anything that might divert your attention, and abide by all traffic laws. Tragic events can be minimized so that the solar eclipse is only a spectacle to behold from above rather than one to be startled by from below.

Let’s use caution when driving and ensure that the necessity to save innocent lives is not overshadowed by the sun’s beauty. If the sun crashes, there won’t be any more life, but there will be another eclipse.
