Most had never been exposed to such brutality. Ilka Brühl, a German teenager, encountered it frequently.

Ilka has cleft lips and nose from birth. Rare is ectodermal dysplasia.

She had the abnormality long before the procedure.

She was aware that her deformities did not characterize how she looked. Ilka came to terms with the fact that surgery couldn’t make her face better.

Before Ilka Brühl gave birth in January 1992, her parents believed she was in good health. Was she. The girl’s breathing problems were noticed by the doctors. Nose covered.

Teen Ilka had self-doubt. She learned through her education and television advertisements. As businesses pushed societal beauty norms, Ilka felt underrepresented. She believed that revealing her face was worse than being completely nude.

She disregarded bullying during school. Ilka was great.

She led a double life.

After 10 treatments, she was content with herself. She gained confidence and encouraged others once she realized how valuable she was.

The first picture session in 2014 was the turning point.

She told Insider, “I was so afraid that she would laugh at me when she saw me in real life that I was on the edge of turning back numerous times on the way there [the photographer].

I’ve discovered that every flaw and mistake is a part of who you are. Make the most of it, she urged.

Ilka, age 20, had rhinoplasty. Ilka believed the procedure would give her the confidence to accept herself.

Surgery caused a radical transformation.

Another fault surfaced once the injuries had healed. Ilka told BILD, “I realized beauty cannot be created on the operating table.”

In my opinion, beauty is external. You may glow from inside when you accept who you are.

Ilka declined surgery in favor of other endeavors. She needs to accept herself instead of trying to be “normal”.

I had fun and became gregarious. “I withdraw from the others, not the other way around.”

Ilka was aware that she seemed “different,” but it was okay. She enjoyed being unique. German lady recognized that by sharing her challenges and experiences, she may encourage others to embrace themselves.

Brühl discussed her self-doubt on a podcast. She counsels valuing oneself. Differently Beautiful: How I Learned to Love Myself was one of her books.

In 2018, she co-founded Project Grenzenlos (Project Limitless) with two pals. The campaign affirms the beauty of the deformed. It appeals to Ilka Brühl.
