A teenage driver and his co-driver were killed in a rally sprint incident in New Zealand.
The two unfortunate victims were 35-year-old Tyson Jemmett and teenager Brooklyn Horan.
Horan and Jemmet were racing in the Arcadia Road Rallysprint in Paparoa when their car collided with a river.
The vehicle veered off the gravel road and into a flooded river, per a police investigator.
At the site, first responders declared both of them deceased.
Officially, MotorSport New Zealand confirmed that Horan was driving the vehicle when it crashed.
Although younger drivers can compete in some events, New Zealanders must be 16 years old to obtain a driver’s license.
The junior driver program “means that people aged 12 to 16 can get a competition license,” according to the website of MotorSport New Zealand.
According to MotorSport, young drivers frequently participate in these events.
However, the company has stated that a thorough inquiry would be conducted.
According to a MotorSport release, “the event took place on Arcadia Road in Paparoa, which was closed to the public for the duration of the event under the authority of the local Road Controlling Authority.”
“Although it is too early in the investigation to speculate on the primary causes of the crash, it does not appear that the road was in a hazardous or detrimental state.”
The president of Motorsport New Zealand, Wayne Christie, said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these two competitors and everyone involved with the Arcadia Road Rallysprint.”
“There is no doubt that everyone in the motorsports world will be shocked and upset by this terrible tragedy.”
“In the next days, we will be providing support to everyone involved.”
Numerous individuals have been expressing gratitude towards the two on social media.
Hyden Paddon, the World Rally Championship winner, apologized on X after learning of the two fatalities in the collision.
“What a sad event yesterday!” he exclaimed. Too suddenly, two wonderful people were taken away.
“Brooklyn Horan was one of the most promising young rally stars who was going to make it big, and Tyler was a huge rally fan and family man.”
“Even though your career was just getting started, you had already made an impression.”
“We send our condolences to the friends and family of Brooklyn Horan and his co-driver Tyson,” stated Winger Motorsport in a statement.
Furthermore, 1Eighty Racing said, “What a natural talent! We are thinking of your family and will miss you on the track.
“It was with a heavy heart that we heard the breaking news that Brooklyn died while doing the very thing our families loved together,” stated Hodgson Motorsport.
“In moments like these, you realize that the sport we selected has its share of extreme highs and lows.”
“Brooklyn, you were a wonderful, kind, loving, and happy child, and that hadn’t changed years later when we ran into each other again at off-roading last year. You had just gotten a little bit taller.”
His wife Lucy, who is expecting their first child, is going to miss him terribly.
To support his wife and unborn child, some of his former coworkers have launched a fundraising campaign.
