According to a royal expert, the late Prince Philip called the Duchess of Sussex in a quite derogatory way.
The term highlighted parallels between Meghan Markle and Wallis Simpson, the controversial ex-wife of King Edward VIII, even though both ladies were married to members of the royal family and went through difficult divorces.
Prince Philip reportedly gave Meghan a nickname that suggested this connection.
Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII of England
King Edward VIII became one of the most contentious royal figures in recent memory when he chose to abdicate in December 1936, less than a year after ascending to the throne, in order to wed Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee who would go on to become the Duchess of Windsor.
It was illegal for royals to marry a divorced person at the time, according to the Royal Observer. In 2002, this ban was removed, three years before to Prince Charles and Camilla’s marriage.
Vogue claims that King Edward and Wallis Simpson were prohibited from returning home after their marriage without the approval of the newly crowned King George VI due to fears that it would incite discontent among the public.
During their years in exile, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor garnered media attention. When they visited Nazi Germany in 1937 and were seen on tape giving Adolf Hitler the notorious Nazi salute, it was one of their scariest experiences.
The cruel moniker of Prince Philip
Royal writer Ingrid Seward offered insight into Prince Philip’s perspective in an interview with GB News. She stated that Prince Philip thought Meghan and Wallis Simpson had a lot in common, which is why the Duchess of Sussex adopted a low-key persona.
According to Seward, Prince Philip—who was known for his astute evaluation of character—could not overlook the parallels between Meghan and Prince Harry and Edward and Mrs. Simpson.
“I believe Prince Philip had a keen sense of people; rather than always seeing the worst in people, he frequently made an effort to find the positive aspects in them,” Seward said.
He used to refer to Meghan as the Duchess of Windsor because he could not shake the parallels between her and Edward, Harry, and Ms. Simpson. He used to call her DOW, but not to her face, she continued.
Seward further on Prince Philip’s apprehensions about Meghan in her book “My Mother and I,” describing him as “wary” of the former Suits actress and her potential impact on the royal family.
Different members of the royal family had different opinions about Meghan’s impact and position. Queen Elizabeth II had “high hopes” for Meghan, while Prince Philip believed she may be disruptive.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the life of royalty
Meghan and Harry have mostly been out of the spotlight since 2020, when they moved to California and gave up their royal duties.
Harry is scheduled to attend a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 8th, which marks the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games, in the UK, according to the Daily Express. Given her wish to avoid the limelight and her safety worries, Meghan is expected to remain in the US.
Meghan occasionally returns to the UK for significant events like Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022, but she has declined to attend certain significant celebrations, such as King Charles III’s coronation, which Harry attended by himself last year.
It’s clear that Meghan is prioritizing her safety and peace of mind over her connection with the royal family in the face of persistent criticism and public interest.
