Target is to close nine shops in four states as a result of rising burglaries and “organized retail crime.” Crime problems continued even after measures including hiring more guards, using outside security companies, and installing theft deterrents were put in place. The following are the impacted markets and the surviving stores:
City of New York:
517 E 117th St., Harlem (96 shops left, over 20,000 workers)
Seattle
Ballard: 1448 NW Market St., Ste. 100 (22 surviving shops, about 4,000 employees) College Way: 4535 College Way NE
Oakland/San Francisco:
SF Folsom, Oakland: 1690 Folsom St. Broadway: 2650 Broadway
Pittsburgh: 4301 Century Blvd.; employs about 6,400 people and has 32 surviving businesses.
Portland
Hollywood: 4030 NE Halsey St. Powell: 3031 SE Powell Blvd. Gallery: 939 SW Morrison St. Hollywood: 15 surviving stores, more than 2,500 workers
More than 150 businesses will stay open in these locations despite the closures. By locking the cases of some items and working with the Homeland Security Investigations section of the US Department of Homeland Security, Target is strengthening security procedures. The corporation stressed, “Although we will continue to make significant investments across our business, we cannot address this issue alone.”
