A 20-year-old skier on Mount Washington died after falling 600 feet on Sunday. Because of the rainy and icy weather over the weekend, rescuers had to extract at least two more individuals from the New Hampshire peak.
Madison Saltsburg perished after falling over Tuckerman Ravine, a precipitous glacial incline on the southeast face of the massive New England peak, according to NBC station WBTS-TV News.
The day after three persons became caught on the mountain, there was a deadly fall. Though not severely enough to require rescue, two of them were injured.
“The snow rangers and emergency workers were up there late last night,” US Forest Service spokesman Colleen Mainville said to the news outlet on Sunday.
Snow and high winds delayed down rescue operations. It was predicted to snow around a foot.
The highest peak in the Northeast, Mount Washington, is a favorite among backcountry skiers. But the peak is notorious for its lightning-fast storms, which call for numerous rescues.
According to WBTS, a hiker from Kentucky had to be rescued from a different area of the mountain last week after he fell and severely injured his head. And he was freezing.
Joabe Barbosa, 23, lost one of his shoes at around 6:45 p.m. on Thursday and tumbled down the route into Ammonusuc Ravine. He injured himself by hitting his face and head.
Approximately 3,600 feet above sea level, Barbosa was able to phone 911 and receive assistance while on the path.
The hiker’s rescue from the mountaintop and transportation to Littleton Regional Health Care took four hours. According to representatives of New Hampshire Fish and Game, he was not prepared for the walk.
